Education Resources for Veterans

My name is Jared Colton, and I created Warrior to Scholar to help veterans successfully transition from military service into higher education.

I served five years in the U.S. Army as an airborne infantryman, first stationed in Italy with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and later with the 82nd Airborne Division in North Carolina. When I left the military, I faced the same challenges that many veterans experience—navigating the complexities of civilian life and higher education.

Transitioning out of the military was a culture shock. After years of structure and discipline, suddenly, I was on my own, trying to figure out things I had never dealt with before. The process of using the Post-9/11 GI Bill was confusing. I struggled to understand how disability ratings at the VA worked, how schools were structured, and what classes I actually needed to take. Everything felt overwhelming, and at times, I wasn’t sure if I was making the right choices.

I started my journey in higher education at community college, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. It gave me the opportunity to adjust to academic life, explore my interests, and prepare for a four-year university. Eventually, I transferred to the University of California, Riverside, where I’m majoring in Microbiology. My time in college has completely changed my life and perspective, giving me opportunities I never thought possible while I was still in the Army.

Education has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, and I firmly believe it can change the lives of other veterans as well. I created this site because I know firsthand how confusing and frustrating the transition can be, and I want to make it easier for others. My goal is to provide clear, accessible information to help veterans take full advantage of their benefits, choose the right schools, and build a strong foundation for their future.

If you’re a veteran thinking about going to college but don’t know where to start, you’re not alone. Warrior to Scholar is here to guide you through the process, just like I wish I had when I first started. You’ve already accomplished incredible things in the military, now take that same drive and apply it to your education and future success.
